The Laser Hair Removal Procedure

The Cutera CoolGlide Laser hair removal system destroys or impairs targeted hair growth by delivering computer guided long-pulse laser light directly down to the hair follicles. The laser beam is absorbed into the hair follicle residing under the skin surface and destroys it with the generated heat. Since it is large in diameter, a number of follicles are affected simultaneously. An automatic cooling system removes heat from the skin surface for the duration of the procedure to protect the skin and reduce any discomfort. As a result, only a mild stinging, burning sensation is felt during the laser hair removal procedure. It is so minor that no general anesthesia or pain medication is required. However, particularly sensitive skin can be treated to a topical anesthetic cream.

Following The Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Following a laser hair removal treatment, the target area treated with the laser is cleansed. Then, normal activity can be resumed without hassle. There may be a slight reddening surrounding the follicles, but this will disappear in a matter of minutes. As with any treatment involving lasers, protect the treated skin with sunscreen or clothing.

In the weeks following a laser hair removal procedure, hair may appear to be growing in the treated areas.   These are the detached hair shafts from the dead follicles waiting to be expelled, they tend to fall off easily whilst you take a shower, however if they do not fall out then they are the hair that have not been targeted in this treatment cycle as they are destroyed only when they are lasered in their active growing stage, therefore treatments are repeated every 4-6 weeks depending on hair density.  5-8 treatments are typically required for most areas.

Why laser and not IPL?

Always ask your skin care therapist whether the machine they are using is a true Nd:YAG Laser or whether it is an IPL (Intense Pulse Light) machine. IPL was created to perform photofacials and while it does remove hair, it does so by burning it off the surface. The wavelength of light used does not penetrate deep enough into the skin to permanently kill hair follicles. IPL will cause burns on darker skin types.
